Day 11: What is the connection between being an American and being a Christian?

Proverbs 24:19-29

”Do not fret because of evildoers or be envious of the wicked, for the evildoer has no future hope, and the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.”

As we look around our world, it is easy to become discouraged, sad and/or angry. Our once great America seems to be falling apart at the seams. Why?

Because if you look at world events from a world view, you see the world like Satan wants you to see it. However, if you see the world as God wants you to see it, it is a very different picture. There is always hope in God, and there is still hope for America.

Americans as defined by the world “as relating to or characteristics of the United States or its inhabitants. A native or citizen of the United States.” The world is wrong. If people were able to be simply defined and united by their geographical location, then you would have a United Iraq, Russia or Korea. But you don’t.

Unfortunately, many people today and in the past seventy years began to believe the world definition that being an American made you special. As a result, we began to move away from God. The more we moved away from God, the more we began to look like the rest of the world. A collection of peoples in the same geographical location fighting to control each other.

In truth, Americans are best defined as those who believe and follow Judeo-Christian principles and practices (being Jewish or Christian). Americans depend on God and follow his precepts. As a result, America was unified and prospered. Being an American was synonymous with being a Christian. We were the envy of the world and the reason we are a target by those who hate God. Which brings me to my prayer this morning.

I was praying for the retired special forces who have decided to help rescue Americans, many who are Christian, from Afghanistan. It dawned on me that now they can do what needs to be done without the hindrance of those who care more about rank, awards, career or perceptions. They can operate in the love that made America great.

John 15:13,

”Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

Real Americans and real Christians still exist…. we still have a chance. Let us be bold in claiming Jesus and remove the hindrance of fear so that we may also operate in love.

Action: Do something kind for someone who is not a believer.
