Day 17: Are you still praying about it or doing something?

Proverbs 14:23,

“In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty.”

About two years ago I decided I wanted to learn to play the bass guitar. My end goal was one day to play in the Blue Grass Band at the eight o’clock service. I practiced for eighteen months and found that talking about playing an instrument and learning to play an instrument were two very different things. Compounding the process was a fifty year old plus brain and no natural talent.

One morning while hanging around backstage, Rick asked me to come up and play with the band. He had asked on several other occasions, but I just didn’t feel ready. In reality, I was not sure if I would ever be ready. For some reason, on this particular morning I took a chance. I’m not sure how well it went, and I struggled mightily. I am only disappointed in one thing… I wasn’t there to see my wife’s face when Gary asked her how long I had been playing the bass. She had no idea I was making a joyful, although mostly out of tune, noise to the Lord. Here we are four months later, and I struggle through each set hoping to be a little bit better each week.

I share this story not to bring attention to my bass prowess, but instead to encourage someone who may read this that maybe it is your time. It is your time to step up and serve in a ministry, your time to lead or attend a Sunday school class, your time to learn sign language or Spanish. Your time to start a small group. Maybe it is your time to stop talking about and praying about our evil and corrupt world and find a place to start making a difference.

Action: What is it time for you to do?
