Day 9: Why do you believe what you believe?

Psalms 34:8,

“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!”

Have you ever pondered the question, “why do you believe what you believe?” Have you ever verbalized out loud, I believe in Jesus Christ because (fill in your why)? Try it.

If you are like me, the first time you speak out loud the “I believe” part, it is very easy.  I know definitively what I believe. However, the “why” part is a lot more difficult. When I have asked people this question, their answers range from “because I said so” to “God said it I believe and that settles it” to a rambling incoherent excuse laden rant. But in 1 Peter 3:15 we find, “but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”

My defense: I lived a life without Jesus from age 18 to around 40. I gave him a passing thought and lip service of being a Christian but did not fully submit. I tried to live with one foot loosely in the kingdom of God and one foot in the world. However, in retrospect it was both feet solidly in the world.  I was always striving, but never attaining. I thought I was having fun, but the fun never lasted and most of the time people had to tell me how much fun I had because I couldn’t remember. Relationships were shallow and transient at best. I made bad decisions and fixed those bad decisions by making even worse decisions.

I know life without God, and I know life with God. And I have seen for myself that the Lord is good.

2 Timothy 4:3
“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.”
