The Bible does not lock us into tight restrictions as to the number of spiritual gifts or even their definitions. The four major lists of gifts are found in these passages: Romans 12:3-8, 1 Corinthians 12:1-11, 27-31, Ephesians 4:11-12, and 1 Peter 4:9-11, however there are other passages that mention or illustrate other gifts/abilities that are not included in these lists.
Identifying your Spiritual Gift helps answer the questions, “What do I do? What can I do? Where can I serve?” Spiritual Gift Surveys are not absolutely exact; however, they may aid a person in determining areas of ministry/service upon which they may focus and explore.
In discovering Spiritual Gifts, here are some ideas in addition to taking a Spiritual Gift Survey:
- Read God’s Word and ask God to show you the gifts that He has placed in you. As you read through the description of gifts, ask the Lord to impress upon your heart and mind those gifts which He has placed in you. Don’t tell the Lord what gifts you want; trust Him to place in you the gifts that He wants you to have. (1 Cor. 12:11)
- Ask others that are walking with the Lord to tell you what gifts that they see in you. All followers of Christ Jesus are members of the same body; encourage one another by sharing those gifts that are recognized in your brothers and sisters.
- Try out areas of ministry/service that you think may be areas of your giftedness. Faith includes risk and trying something new. If you think you may have the gift of teaching and a friend thinks so too, then consider asking to assist a teacher or possibly volunteer for a short-term teaching assignment. You may make some discoveries.
- Just because God provides His people with Spiritual Gifts does not mean that you can only minister/serve in that area. Just because you may not be gifted in a certain area does not mean that you could not assist or serve in that area as needed.
