Day Ten: Moses – Leading Fearlessly

Today’s Reading: Hebrews 11:24-28; Exodus 2:113:15

Introduction: Moses was one of the most consequential people in history. Most people come to a moment when they must decide what matters to them. For Moses, it wasn’t really the burning bush that he encountered, though deciding to go take a look at it certainly changed his life. Moses’ moment of decision occurred when he saw a fellow Israelite being beaten by an Egyptian. Moses decided he couldn’t stand idly by while this man was being beaten. Everything that happened in Moses’ life goes back to that moment when he decided to be identified with the people of God. But leadership is seldom a straight line. There are usually a series of clarifying events that focus leaders on their purpose. Moses certainly went through those events, at times, reluctantly. But God knew He had His man. God equipped Moses with everything he needed to fulfill his task. He even gave him a vision to work for. When He called Moses at the burning bush at Mount Sinai (also, known as Mount Horeb), God gave him a sign to know that he was doing God’s work. God told him the sign would be that the people he would lead out of Egypt would “worship God at this mountain” (Exodus 3:12). That’s the vision. God told him that he would bring the people of God to Mount Sinai where they would enter into covenant with their God. He saw it before it happened, and he went back to Egypt knowing he would return with God’s people to the place of that burning bush.

Application: God calls men and women to serve Him. Sometimes, He gives them huge tasks. Most of the time, He gives them something less consequential. But regardless of the task, God calls all of His people to serve Him in this world in some way. Whatever the task, it involves leadership. It requires that we stand out from the world and decide to be counted with God’s people. Just as He did with Moses, so He will do for each of us. He gives us His Holy Spirit to guide us. He gives us spiritual gifts to empower us to succeed in our calling. And He gives us a vision that we’re working toward. We are working toward the day when Jesus will descend in the clouds and rule on earth in His Kingdom. For some of us, there may be other visions, as well, for unique tasks along the way, but ultimately, we know where this is all heading. It is only for each of us to do our part.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for saving me. Thank You for filling me with Your Holy Spirit. Thank You for giving me everything I need to fulfill Your will for my life on earth. Some places in the world are becoming very hostile to Your truth. Help me to decide to be numbered among Your people, to stand up for Your gospel and Your truth, and to be the leader that You have called me to be for Your name’s sake. Amen.
