The Promised Helper

Object Lesson: Talk about a time that someone helped you understand or do something.

A couple of years ago, we bought a new house. We had to move all of our things from the old house to the new one…it was a lot of stuff! We had some things that I couldn’t move by myself, so I asked some friends to help me.

We all need others who help us. Sometimes we just need help with small things—other times we have really big problems and we’re not sure what to do.

Read: John 14:15-17

Maybe you are like me. I do love Jesus (there isn’t room here to say all of the reasons why!) but it feels impossible to do what I know he wants me to do. Jesus knew how hard it would be for us, so he asked God the Father to give us help. That help is the Holy Spirit. In our verses today we see a couple of things about who the Holy Spirit is and what he does. As the Spirit of truth, he helps us to know what is right and wrong, what is true or false. As our Helper, he gives us the power to believe and do what is right and true. This is amazing! When we try to do these on our own we make a mess of things and get it wrong. But when we trust the Holy Spirit, when we ask him to help us, he is faithful to do it. That’s one of the reasons God sent him to us!

The other thing we see about the Holy Spirit is that He is always with us. When we choose to follow Jesus and make him the “boss,” the Holy Spirit comes to live in us and will never go away. He will always be there to help us. We never have to wonder and we never have to worry. The Holy Spirit will always be with us and will always point us to Jesus. What an incredible Help that God has given us!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for giving me your Holy Spirit. Thank you that he helps me to love and obey Jesus and is always with me. Help me to listen to him today. In Jesus name, amen.
